Ridley Scott has announced that a sequel to Gladiator is currently in development.

Scott has toyed with the idea of making a sequel to the Oscar-winning blockbuster Gladiator since it first premiered in 2000. Scott, who reportedly wants to direct the film, has brought on Peter Craig (The Town) to write the script for the project.

According to Deadline, the film will follow the story of Lucius, the young Roman who was inspired by the gladiator Maximus. Despite being groomed by his villainous uncle, Commodus, the life and death of Maximus made an impression on Lucius and his mother. It is unknown if Scott will try to entice Russell Crowe, who played Maximus in the original film, back for some role in the proposed sequel. There is also no indication of how long the development or production of the film could take.

The film will be developed by Paramount and co-financed by Universal. DreamWorks, which produced the original film with Scott, will not be involved in the sequel.

Scott is currently attached to a number of other projects, including an adaptation of the story of Merlin for Disney, a drama about photojournalist Lyndsey Addario with Scarlett Johansson set to star and the TNT television series Raised by Wolves.
