DC announced The Batman actor Paul Dano has written a Riddler comic book that will hit stores this October.

DC revealed that Riddler actor Dano has penned a six-issue Riddler: Year One series. "For many films and comic book fans, Paul Dano's portrayal of The Riddler in Matt Reeves' The Batman (in theaters now) was arguably one of the most chilling and terrifying incarnations ever seen in a Batman film," DC announced. "This October, fans will have the opportunity to learn more about The Riddler's origins in Riddler: Year One, a six-issue bimonthly DC Black Label series, written by The Batman actor Paul Dano, with art by acclaimed European illustrator Stevan Subic, making his DC debut. This series explores the background of how accountant Edward Nashton went from a simple Gotham City nobody to becoming Batman's nemesis, setting them on a collision course in the blockbuster feature film."

While further details on Riddler: Year One are scarce, the comic's title is similar to that of Batman: Year One, the 1987 series from Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli, Todd Klein and Richmond Lewis. The four-issue run tells of Bruce Wayne's early years as a crime-fighter, while also touching on Jim Gordon's recent transfer to the Gotham City Police Department. DC also debuted Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's Batman: Earth One in 2012, which tells a modernized reinterpretation of Batman's story in a separate continuity. Other superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman also got their own Earth One storylines.

Reeves' new movie doesn't dive too much into the Riddler's deadly origin story or what his character was up to prior to the events of the film; although, a prequel novel published prior to The Batman's release confirms the Riddler's full name to be Edward Nashton. The novel further describes Nashton as a fellow high school student of Bruce's who turned his focus to puzzle-based challenges after graduating.

Leading up to the release of The Batman, Dano has previously commented on how past interpretations of the Riddler in various comics played into his performance. "I certainly read a lot of the comics," he said. "But really for fun, and to soak up any vibrations one can. Certainly, there were inspirations for Matt, just in essence, in soul or tone. But there's nothing that's head-on, in terms of this character. It was more about breathing in Gotham, and the lore."

Riddler: Year One will release in October from DC Comics. The Batman is currently playing in theaters.
