Ever since prolific director Martin Scorsese compared the Marvel Cinematic Universe to "theme parks," several creatives within the industry have shared their thoughts about his comments. Last night during the 77th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, host Ricky Gervais took the opportunity to add his two cents to the conversation, joking about the controversy Scorsese accidentally caused.

“Martin Scorsese, the greatest living director, made the news for his controversial comments about the Marvel franchise. He said they’re not real cinema, and they remind him of theme parks. I agree,” Gervais said. “Although I don’t know what he’s doing hanging around at theme parks -- he’s not big enough to go on the rides. He’s tiny.”

Scorsese, to his credit, took the joke in stride as he sat next to Robert De Niro, who stars in his latest movie The Irishman. Gervais then took the opportunity to acknowledge actors in attendance who had played or have been a part of a superhero movie, saying: “The actors who just do Hollywood movies now do fantasy adventure nonsense. They wear masks and capes and really tight costumes. Their job isn’t acting anymore. It’s going to a gym twice a day and taking steroids. Have we got an award for ‘Most Ripped Junkie?’ No point, we know who’d win that.”

The Irishman is available to stream now on Netflix. The film is based on a memoir entitled I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt and stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
