Rick & Morty Just Appeared in the Last Animated Series You'd Expect

The titular characters from the beloved animated show Rick & Morty just made a cameo in a rather random place -- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

The scientist and his grandson appeared in the background of an episode titled "Grannies Gone Wild," and people were immediately... confused. On Reddit, in particular, fans wondered why on Earth this little crossover/homage exists, and offered up a number of theories in reaction to it.

The two pony-versions of Rick and Morty had many of the characters signature features. Rick had his lab coat and blue hair, while Morty was the color of his yellow shirt and even wore a generally anxious look on his face.

Though this seems like a really wild thing to happen, it's actually pretty in line with the concept of Rick & Morty. As one Reddit user pointed out, if there are indeed infinite timelines, then there would naturally be one in which everyone is a pony. Plus, MLP is known for referencing various other pop culture icons, so it makes sense that something as popular as the Adult Swim show would make it into Hasbro's equine universe.

Despite the shows wild popularity and avid fanbase, the Adult Swim show has not yet been renewed for a fourth season. The reason for this is unknown at this time.

Rick and Morty, created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, first premiered on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block back in 2013 and has gone on to air three seasons since. There was a long hiatus between the second and third season, which ended on April Fool's Day of last year.
