Swimpedia released a claymation video promoting Adult Swim's Rick and Morty by depicting Morty as the four adolescents who are beset by leeches in 1986's Stand by Me.The 20-second spot alludes to a scene near the end of Rob Reiner's cult classic, in which the quartet of friends stumbles into a deceptively deep puddle that turns out to be infested with bloodsuckers. The clay figures each represent a different incarnation of Morty as he writhes and struggles to extricate himself from the grip of the carnivorous parasites. The clip ends with a close-up of his hand, still in the clutches of a beefy leech.RELATED: Rick and Morty: Rick Realizes the Truth About His Relationship With Morty

Classic film references abound in the five-season animated show, with titles like Fantastic Voyage, Risky Business and Alien providing fodder for the show's writers. The whole premise of the series is drawn from a short film by co-creator Justin Roiland, which he produced as a parody of Back to the Future. The zany Rick bears more than a passing resemblance to "Doc," Christopher Lloyd's Dr. Emmett Brown, while the similarities between Morty and Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly are palpable. The parallels are directly addressed in a recently-dropped teaser for the Season 5 finale of the popular series.

Rick and Morty aired its Season 5 finale on Sept. 6 on Adult Swim. The series stars Roiland in both titular roles, with an additional voice cast including Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke and Spencer Grammer.
