The following contains spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 6, Episode 3, "Bethic Twinstinct," which debuted Sept. 18, on Adult Swim.

It's no secret that as much as Rick and Morty fans like Rick Sanchez's zany antics, he's an absolute jerk. He's been toxic to Morty for some time, leaving the kid wondering if Rick is still using him as a pawn to catch Weird Rick. In addition, Rick's unhinged mentality has rubbed off on Summer, who now enjoys violent excursions a bit too much.

Notably, Rick's nasty traits showed up in his relationship with Beth, where he proved to be a terrible father. While she wasn't his genetically, he still raised her, yet he lacked compassion. It's why Beth gave in to the clone plan, creating Space Beth in a scheme that left it vague which one of them was the legit Beth, so at least one would have a fulfilling life without guilt. Shockingly, though, a major development occurred in Season 6, affirming Rick is trying to be a good dad and work past all the trauma he inflicted.

Rick and Morty had Rick healing Beth and Space Beth

Rick's unique change took place when he discovered Beth and Space Beth were having an affair. They basically completed each other, but when Rick found out, rather than chide them, he subtly supported their quest to figure themselves out. Usually, he would be up for outing them so that they could hurt Jerry, but he kept it secret as he understood the ladies needed answers to their identity.

In addition, Rick offered empathy and wisdom when the ladies eventually wanted him to lobotomize them in order to forget their fling. Rick warned against it, admitting people make mistakes and learn from them in a surprise speech. He was referencing how he is supposedly trying to change and be better, but his cynicism aside, Rick was right in his message. He knew the mind-wipe would hurt the rest of the family too, especially because Jerry found out, which would mean he'd never get closure. Thus, he didn't want them to run from their feelings anymore, while leaving their kin with so many questions.

Rick and Morty had Rick healing Beth and Space Beth

Rick mentioned that if they did, and everyone else pretended to not know after the mind-wipe, the truth would eventually emerge and wreck the women for being cowards. This was quite illuminating as old Rick would have jumped at the chance to play god and watch the chaos unfold. But rather than experiment with his daughters, Rick just wanted them to embrace their full selves and be happy, even if it hurt the family in the short-term, as he knew they would all come to accept the relationship in time.

Rick recently messed with Morty's personality and rebellious identity, so this might be guilt manifesting from that incident. As it stands, though, Rick seems to be evolving and making up for a checkered past where these Beths were pawns to him after he lost his biological family to the sadistic Weird Rick. How honest and genuine this main Rick is remains to be seen, but ultimately he did help the Beths heal, and get the family to accept their romance as something conventional in an unconventional world.

Rick and Morty airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. on Adult Swim.
