Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery writer-director Rian Johnson recently indicated he's eager to make Knives Out 3 his next project.

Johnson expressed interest in developing the third installment in the anthology franchise as soon as possible in an interview with Total Film. "I had for a while thought that maybe I should do something else first [...] But the God's honest truth is, I had so much fun making this one," he said. "And the creative challenge of figuring out a third movie that's completely different from both this one and the first one -- right now, that's the most interesting creative challenge to me. So I might just dive in and see what we come up with."

It's currently unclear how Johnson's desire to move forward with Knives Out 3 would fit with his existing slate of projects, including his unnamed Star Wars film trilogy for Lucasfilm. The production company announced Johnson's as-yet-unnamed trio of movies in November 2017, shortly before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which Johnson helmed. There's been little movement on Johnson's trilogy since then, however, the filmmaker and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy continue to insist his Star Wars movies are still going ahead.

Knives Out 2 Brings Back Benoit Blanc

For now, Johnson's focus is still largely on promoting Glass Onion, which is still several weeks away from its brief, pre-streaming theatrical release. Netflix recently released a new Glass Onion trailer that spotlights the return of Daniel Craig as brilliant detective Benoit Blanc and the movie's murder mystery party setting. Franchise newcomers Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn all feature prominently as well, as do Glass Onion's stunning Greek island locales.

Aside from its central whodunnit narrative, Glass Onion also promises to peel back new layers of Benoit Blanc's character, including the truth about his sexuality. Johnson confirmed in a recent interview that the Southern sleuth is "obviously" gay while discussing a scene featuring Blanc's living arrangements. He also spoke enthusiastically about the actor hired to cameo as Blanc's partner, whose identity has not yet been made public. "[T]here's nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with," Johnson teased.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will have a one-week limited theatrical release starting Nov. 23, before making its streaming premiere on Netflix on Dec. 23.
