They may be Marvel’s First Family, but lately the Fantastic Four been falling nearer and nearer to last place.
“Fantastic Four,” last summer’s Josh Trank-directed Fox adaptation of the beloved Marvel comic that flopped with fans, critics, and box office receipts, was a big winner at Saturday night’s inglorious Razzie Awards, taking home prizes in two categories outright, while sharing the night’s big trophy — Worst Picture — with “Fifty Shades of Grey” — which it tied, but not in the way that “Fifty Shades” fans might prefer.
In addition to being named co-Worst Picture, “Fantastic Four” won Worst Director, although Josh Trank’s scorched-Earth Twitter strategy during the film’s promotional rollout certainly offered its own brand of irresistible entertainment. It also took the gold in the Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel category, beating out such luminaries as “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” and the final sequence of “Human Centipede 3.”
It wasn’t all Best-Worst for the FF, though, as the entire core-four cast of Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Miles Teller and Jamie Bell was nominated for Worst Screen Combo, but lost out to Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson for their “Fifty Shades of Grey” on-screen chemistry and lack thereof. The script by Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater and Josh Trank was also nominated for Worst Screenplay, but “Grey” was again a winner in that category. It was surely an honor just to be nominated.
The Razzies are meant to be a light-hearted exercise in poking fun at Hollywood’s self-serious awards season, but the failures of the “FF” film have real ramifications regarding the studios’s plans to maintain the franchise and character license. Marvel Comics has discontinued the publication of an ongoing “Fantastic Four” title, in the wake of “Secret Wars,” which could make it even more difficult to re-establish the brand’s viability.
