After months of build-up, the cataclysmic conclusion to the crossover event Dark Nights: Death Metal and the bold alternate timelines of Future State, the next era of the DC Universe begins with Infinite Frontier #0. This oversized special kicks off this expansive era and explores several corners of the reborn DCU, checking in with DC's biggest icons and showcasing their new status quo. And more than just an anthology sampler of the titles unfolding over upcoming months, the special contains plenty of bombshell revelations that set the stage for the next great battle for the soul of the entire DCU.

Following her ascension during Death Metal's climactic final battle, Diana Prince's Wonder Woman is joined by the Spectre to scour the reborn DCU for the teased secrets made by the crossover event's end. Along the way, the pair observe several seismic changes around the world, including the Joker's latest lethal attack, a new Wonder Woman rising up to claim her Amazon destiny, the Justice League rallying around the surprise reappearance of Black Adam and so much more. And by the end, emotional new truths surface, and the DCU all feels more exciting and dangerous than it had before it was consumed by the fires of Death Metal.

With a framing story written by Joshua Williamson, James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder, the Infinite Frontier special is a much more tightly constructed oversized anthology than previous titles released in this format. Not every single vignette ties in directly to Wonder Woman and the Spectre's tour of the new DCU, but they all offer an entertaining look at the different characters poised to play a big role in the foreseeable future. Virtually every corner of the universe is covered, with the creative teams keeping sight of the emotional core of their respective characters in each of their various stories as most tales flowing seamlessly into the next despite the extensive number of creators involved.

Of the tales included, the standouts worth calling additional attention include Tynion and Jorge Jimenez, with colorist Tomeu Morey, providing one of the more gripping stories in the bunch. Joëlle Jones, with colorist Jordie Bellaire, craft a glimpse of Brazilian Wonder Woman Yara Flor approaching her superhero destiny apart from the alternate future timeline of Future State. Williamson reunites with Howard Porter and colorist Hi-Fi for one last run with The Flash. And writers Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad -- working with penciler Alitha Martinez, inker Mark Morales and colorist Emilio Lopez -- provide a deep dive into Themyscira and Nubia's rise as it copes with Diana's absence following the rebirth of the DCU after Death Metal, with a top-down look at the Amazons as they mourn and rebuild their society.

Infinite Frontier #0 shakes up the DCU and provides a clear direction for the biggest characters in-universe as they find themselves at individual crossroads. The stakes are set and key players introduced along with their new status quo, with each of the creative teams leaving an intriguing hook for readers to follow up on in the weeks to come. While not every short story in the set perhaps gets enough real estate to draw readers in to follow the bread crumbs, each vignette does work within the larger story of the special itself as it becomes clear that the DC Universe remains just as perilous as ever after Death Metal.
