Resident Evil's Shinji Mikami revealed that he intends to direct one more game before he retires.

Mikami, 56, spoke to VG247 about his plans to return to the directing chair in the future. He confessed that although his staff at Tango Gameworks handle the directing, he would still be keen to eventually resume his duties for one more title after more than 30 years in the video game industry. He also explained the reasons for establishing Tango Gameworks, stating that it was set up "with the vision of creating a studio that gives young and talented creators a chance." The studio was founded in 2010 and developed its first game four years later.

After starting his career as a video game planner and designer at Capcom, Mikami directed the first Resident Evil game in 1996. The survival horror game received excellent reviews and became the best-selling PlayStation game at the time. Following the first game's success, Mikami produced five subsequent titles. He returned to direct the Resident Evil remake in 2002 and Resident Evil 4 in 2005 but has taken a backseat from the role in recent years.

Resident Evil has also been adapted into several movies and television shows. The first of which was Biohazard 4D-Executer, an animated film which was released in 2000. The first of seven live-action movies came out two years later. The most recent movie Welcome to Raccoon City hit theaters in November 2021. Its director, Johannes Roberts, was quick to suggest further movies by announcing his plans for a Resident Evil 4 adaptation.

The next Resident Evil video game is set to hit shelves in 2022. Resident Evil: Re:Verse was originally planned for a July 2021 release but it was delayed to give the developers more time. Elsewhere, a Kickstarter-fuelled Resident Evil board game is also in the works, which will see the first video game adapted for the tabletop format.

Although best known for creating Resident Evil, Mikami has also directed God Hand, Vanquish and Dino Crisis. Outside of directing, he also served as the executive producer for the first Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney titles. Mikami's most recent directing role was The Evil Within which was released in 2014. Since then, he has worked predominantly as an executive producer while also providing the voice of Takahashi in the Japanese version of Fallout 4.

While his next directing role is currently unknown, Mikami's work as an executive producer continues into 2022. Ghostwire: Tokyo will be available on Windows devices and the PS5 as a console exclusive on March 25.
