In adapting the survival-horror video game series for the big screen, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City writer/director Johannes Roberts recently discussed just how meticulously faithful his upcoming film will be to the original Capcom games.Roberts spoke with Fandom about the level of detail Welcome to Raccoon City will adapt from the first two Resident Evil games the film is based on. "Every frame has details to the game," Roberts said. "This is a horror movie created with love of the game." The director goes on to share a number of adapted details with side-by-side comparisons, including the Raccoon City Orphanage, the hamburger the truck driver eats at the beginning of Resident Evil 2 and even the 18-wheeler itself. The details don't end there, as both the mansion and Raccoon City Police Department were built to the specifications of the game, Roberts revealed.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will reboot the film series with a greater focus on the franchise's gaming roots. Based on the first two games, Welcome to Raccoon City will follow Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell), Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper) and Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia) as the group of survivors investigates a dying Midwestern town that was once the headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation.
During an interview earlier this year, Roberts elaborated on how his adaptation will differ from the previous action-centric films from director Paul W.S. Anderson. "I wanted to go back to the horror of it all. I wanted scares and atmosphere rather than full-on action. I think fans of the game felt the same," Roberts said. "They wanted to see the iconic characters and locations and feel that the movie was more in line with the Resident Evil game world so that's really why we chose to go in that direction."
The first full trailer for the film was unveiled earlier this month, showing off a horde of creatures, locations and characters fans of the games are sure to recognize. Featuring details such as Claire Redfield's iconic red leather jacket as well as appearances from investigative journalist Ben Bertolucci and the infamous licker monster, the trailer even suggests Welcome to Raccoon City will homage several exciting and terrifying events from the games. Fans concerned about that trailer's emphasis on action, however, were soon provided with a more horror-oriented preview a few days later.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City arrives in theaters Nov. 24.
