News of Resident Evil's cancellation came a little over a month after Season 1 debuted on Netflix. The show started on a promising note, as it was streamed for over 72 million hours during its first week, making it the second-most-watched show on Netflix. But its status on the top 10 list didn't last long -- the show fell to number three in the second week, and by the third, it had disappeared from the list completely.

The TV Adaptation Was Heavily Inspired by the Resident Evil Game Series

Fans of the Resident Evil series met the video game adaptation with negative reviews almost immediately upon its release. The show's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is only 26%, with fans critiquing it for straying too far from its source material.

However, Resident Evil show creator Andrew Dabb insisted that the show is based heavily on the video game franchise. "The games are our backstory," he said. "Everything that happens in the games exists in this world." He even added that he wanted material from the eighth installment of the game series, Resident Evil: Village, to appear in future seasons. "We may not get there until season 5," he noted, "but it is in our world. As we're moving ahead and talking about scripts for Season 2, the village is a resource we can draw on."

Dabb was planning to go full-steam ahead with another season before the show's cancellation and even teased that a fan-favorite game character, Ada Wong, would "100 percent" be making an appearance in the second season.

Some even started to prepare themselves for a potential cameo from Milla Jovovich, who starred in the original Resident Evil films, after Reddick said he'd like to see her in the show. "I feel like it would be really interesting to see if and how her character could come into this series," he said.

Season 1 of Resident Evil is available to stream on Netflix.
