Resident Evil 4 fans are devastated as a tragic detail is revealed, confirming that players can no longer save a dog's life.

The popular Twitter account @canyoupetthedog talks about and shares all the "pettable" animals in video games. However, it shared a video from IGN showing that a dog that could previously be set free from a bear trap is already dead by the time Leon finds it in the Resident Evil 4 remake. It quoted the tweet with the caption "What the f-ck" which seems to be the consensus for how fans feel, with the tweet gaining 105k likes in just 8 hours.

Fans on Twitter flooded the replies with their dismay, with some expressing doubt over whether it's the same dog and others saying they aren't surprised the developers removed the ability to save it. Some players are saying they don't even want to play the game anymore and are already suggesting mod ideas in which the dog can be saved and be able to pet it.

The Dog Paid Back Your Kindness in the Original Game

At the beginning of the game, players will come across a dog with its leg stuck in a bear trap. Players then have the option to save the dog by having Leon open the bear trap by hand or shooting it to open it up. The dog will then remove its leg, shake it, and run off into the woods. While it may seem like an insignificant act of kindness, players are rewarded later in the game as the dog will return to help out during a challenging boss battle. There is no benefit to leaving it alone or killing it, so with the dog already dead in the remake, it leaves questions surrounding the boss fight the dog joins.

Resident Evil is a Japanese horror game series created by Capcom and is the best-selling in its genre. The games consist of survival horror, third-person shooter and first-person shooter elements in environments typically filled with creatures like zombies. Resident Evil 4 (2023) will be a remake of the original game released in 2005 in which players control U.S. government special agent Leon S. Kennedy, who is sent on a critical mission to save the U.S. president's daughter from a cult. The expectation is high for the 2023 remake to be scarier than 2005’s Resident Evil 4, with its slightly altered storyline and enhancements to the game's characters, atmospheres and backgrounds.

Resident Evil 4 has a planned release date of March 24, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S. It also appears that it will be available for Xbox One after multiple retailers listed the game on their sites.
