WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Resident Alien Season 2, Episode 8, "Alien Dinner Party."

Resident Alien Season 2 has tested Harry while the alien continues to masquerade around Patience as the town's former head doctor. He can't afford to waste time treating citizens or entertaining the whims of Max and Sahar because he's worried his species will be coming to destroy the planet. That paranoia has led to Harry and Asta chasing all sorts of clues, even to New York, in hopes of preventing mankind's total annihilation.

But instead of catching a break, Harry lost his octopus ally and made enemies in the Big Apple. Those enemies thought he was their pawn in the scandal that killed Patience's original doctor Sam, not realizing that Harry was an alien in disguise. To make things even worse, Harry discovered an alien egg he had to take care of -- complicating life more than he ever expected. Unfortunately, there's no looking up from here because Harry also found out the apocalypse he's been trying so hard to stop is already happening, making Resident Alien seem a lot like Secret Invasion.

Comic aficionados will be familiar with Marvel's Secret Invasion storyline, in which Skrulls infiltrated the planet Earth. They pretended to be heroes, villains and other folks with power and influence in order to pave the way for Queen Veranke's empire. The story arc has proven so memorable that Disney+ is making it into an upcoming television series that includes major Marvel Cinematic Universe stars such as Don Cheadle.

In Resident Alien, the invasion is already happening, which Harry discovered when the egg hatched and the alien kid inside latched onto his head to conduct a mind-meld. Harry then connected with Goliath, an alien who had also been hiding out on Earth. Sadly, Goliath confessed that their species wasn't coming to Earth to destroy it... because they were afraid. Another race -- one much more vicious -- was already on the planet replacing people and enacting a doomsday plan. But before he could continue giving details, Harry was shot by an enemy from New York City.

Thankfully, Asta shot the hitman before he could kill Harry, but that means Harry's going to have to break the news that the end of days has been going right under their noses. There aren't many places they can turn for help either -- General McAllister is back and the military are closing in. It's possible that the two sides could form a temporary allience, but either way, he has to formulate a plan and put his new powers to the test because as Goliath said, time's running out.

While it's not clear if Resident Alien was intentionally channeling Secret Invasion, this setup for the next part of Season 2 certainly feels like a throwback to that great Marvel arc. It's interesting that the story unfolds at the same time that Disney's Secret Invasion series is in the works, too. But unlike the comic story, Harry doesn't have other heroes that he can potentially turn to. He'll be facing this invasion almost entirely on his own.

Created by Chris Sheridan, Resident Alien Season 2 airs Wednesdays at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy
