Set in a galaxy far, far away and released almost 20 years ago, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains a beloved video game classic amongst Star Wars fans. Now, it appears as though a remake is in the works.Rumors about a new Knights of the Old Republic game started circulating in January 2021, and fans have been petitioning for a KOTOR remake for next-generation consoles since 2020. Recently, gaming industry insider Jason Schreier told MinnMax that a remake of the game is finally on its way.RELATED: RUMOR: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Game in the Works From a Mystery Studio

Schreier confirmed that EA won't be creating the game's remake. Instead, it will reportedly be created by gaming studio Aspyr Media and is believed to already be in development. At the time of this writing, it's not clear if the remake will be solely focused on compatibility to next-generation platforms or if it will be a complete redesign/update of in-game graphics and functions.

This won't be the first time Aspyr Media worked on the KOTOR. In 2013, Aspyr updated KOTOR's mobile ports (allowing the game to be played on Macs, Androids and iOS) -- right around the game's 10th anniversary. Despite the game being a fan-favorite, it has yet to be released on any Nintendo or PlayStation platform.

In September 2020, a Star Wars fan created a petition to convince EA and Disney to develop a 20th Anniversary, next-generation remake of KOTOR. Since the news of a reported remake broke, the petition has been regaining traction, garnering over 19,000 signatures.

Released in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG game set 4,000 years before the original Star Wars trilogy. The game centers on a mysterious Jedi, who travels the galaxy while attempting to defeat Darth Malak. During his travels, the Jedi forms a crew to help his quest. Notably, the game allows players to join either the Light or Dark Side of the Force, based on their in-game choices. BioWare developed the original, which was published by LucasArts. A sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II -- The Sith Lords, was released the following year.
