Sesame Street Movie to be Directed by Portlandia Co-Creator

UPDATE: Deadline has since confirmed that Jonathan Krisel will direct Warner Bros.' upcoming Sesame Street film.

Portlandia director and co-creator Jonathan Krisel may be headed to Sesame Street.

According to Variety, Krisel will direct the live-action Sesame Street feature for Warner Bros. Shawn Levy and Michael Aguilar will produce the film, which will reportedly be a musical. Mike Rosolio (American Vandal) wrote the first draft of Sesame Street, with Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer) having written the most recent draft.

This marks the first movement on the film since the announcement back in 2016 that the project had moved from Fox to Warner Bros. If true, Sesame Street will serve as Krisel's feature film debut after working on television series such as Portlandia, Baskets and Man Seeking Woman. Krisel has received received three Emmy nominations for directing on Portlandia.

Sesame Street, which first premiered in 1969, moved from its former home at PBS to HBO just a few years ago following a new deal between Sesame Workshop and the cable network. It was at this time that the rights reverted to Warner Bros. and Levy, who has been working on developing the beloved property into a film since 2012.
