A new report suggests Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin will be the villain in Matt Reeves' The Batman.

According to We Got This Covered, sources have confirmed that Cobblepot will be the film's main villain. The report does not specify who will play the character, though it did make reference to Beauty and the Beast star Josh Gad's long-running campaign to get the role. There have also been reports that Wolf of Wall Street star Jonah Hill is being eyed for the role.

This report follows rumors from last year that the villain would appear in the movie. At the time, there were reports the character would serve as the villain for Birds of Prey. However, those were later debunked, with Ewan McGregor being cast as Black Mask. The wording of the report seems to indicate that Penguin will not be the film's only villain, though it's unclear at this time who else might feature prominently.

The Penguin made his big-screen debut in 1992, in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

At this time, it's still unconfirmed who the film's villain will be, and there's a chance that Penguin could only end up playing a minor or secondary role in The Batman. For now, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Reeves turned in his first draft of the script to the studio this past September, with the studio reportedly pleased with screenplay before requesting Reeves polish the script with rewrites. Reports initially indicated that Warner Bros. was targeting a summer 2019 start to principal photography. Newer reports indicate the movie will start filming in November. While the new start date misses that target by several months, it does keep the planned film on track for a potential 2020 release. It's unclear at this time if Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne.
