Deadline has clarified a distinction when it comes to feature films based on DC Comics properties. New Line will handle movies based on comics from Vertigo, DC's mature readers line, while superhero projects like "Wonder Woman," "Aquaman," "The Flash" and the rest will stay with Warner Bros. The article notes that these films will be guided by president Toby Emmerich and New Line President, Production Richard Brener.

It's possible that "Sandman," which has been set up with producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt, will now be a New Line project as opposed to Warner Bros. This corroborates what "Sandman" comic creator Neil Gaiman said back in October when fans wondered why the Vertigo-based film was not included on Warner Bros. slate of DC films.

"It's not a DC Comics film," wrote Gaiman on his blog. "It's a Vertigo film. That's a different slate of films, and a different announcement." It's also worth noting that while 2019's "Shazam" -- which will feature Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam -- is included on Warner Bros.' slate, it's been set up at New Line and not the WB.

The announcement speculates that a number of other films, like the long in-development "Dark Universe" from Guillermo Del Toro, could be in the running for inclusion on New Line's theoretical slate of Vertigo films.
