REPORT: Marvel Was Considering Asian-American Iron Fist

With the news that "Dexter" alum Scott Buck has been hired as the showrunner for "Iron Fist," the fourth series in Marvel's partnership with Netflix, much discussion has centered around the casting of the lead hero. Arguments have been made both for and against and for an Asian-American Danny Rand.

The Hollywood Reporter's Rebecca Sun has weighed in on the debate as well, in a piece called "Why Marvel and Netflix Should Cast an Asian-American Iron Fist." The piece also contains a bit of news, saying that unnamed sources have told the site that the call for a diverse Iron Fist "actually reached the ears of Marvel and Netflix, who met with Asian-American actors in consideration for the lead." But, the sources claim, Marvel is now "leaning toward keeping Iron Fist white." Marvel declined to give a comment about the matter to THR.

This report corroborates Nerds of Color's earlier piece, which read: "I have it on good authority that, for a time, the studio heads were seriously considering looking at Asian American actors to audition for the role of Danny Rand."

Netflix's "Iron Fist" does not yet have a premiere date scheduled.
