Before Disney first James fired Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was likely going to hit theaters in 2020. With him gone, the movie was pushed back indefinitely. Marvel Studios eventually rehired the man who made the first two movies a success, and a new report gives a good indication of when the third film will now start shooting.

Production Weekly reports that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will start filming in February 2021 under the working title "Hot Christmas." Of course, since that date is still almost two years away, plans could certainly change, though Production Weekly is typically quite reliable.

The Suicide Squad reportedly starts shooting in September. Considering the time required for the actual shooting and editing, the production for that film could easily spill into 2020. A Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shooting schedule that begins in February 2021 would give Gunn plenty of time to work on The Suicide Squad before moving from Warner Bros. to Marvel Studios.

The release date for The Suicide Squad is Aug. 6, 2021. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 directed by James Gunn has no release date but will likely hit theatres in 2022.
