A new report suggests that Disney is returning to Prydain with a live-action Black Cauldron project.

The report comes from Daniel Richtman, who had no more information related to the adaptation. It is unclear if it will be a TV show or a movie, or if it will debut in theaters (if it is indeed a film) or on Disney+. No casting details or dates were announced.

Released in 1985 and directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, The Black Cauldron takes place in the fictional land of Prydain in the Middle Ages. It follows Taran, a young pig keeper, the princess Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam and the wild creature Gurgi as they fight to destroy an ancient magical cauldron before the Horned King uses it to conquer the world.

The animated movie is loosely based on the first two books in The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, which is based on Welsh mythology. The five-book series was published between 1964 to 1968 and won the 1966 Newberry Honor and the 1969 Newbery Medal.

The film was the first Disney animated film to revive a PG rating — as opposed to a G rating — and was the first House of Mouse production to feature computer-generated imagery. A box office failure, the film only grossed $21.3 million off a $25-$44 budget. Its poor performance prompted Disney to hold off its home video release until 1998.

The Black Cauldron is the latest classic tale to get the live-action treatment, with Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Hercules and The Snow Queen also in development. While no details are available for Atlantis, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo will be producing Hercules with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Dave Callaham writing the script.

The Black Cauldron, The Snow Queen, Hercules and Atlantis will join a host of other modern live-action remakes that Disney has released over the last several years. So far, Disney has remade Cinderella, The Lion King, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp, Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland (which spanned the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass), Dumbo and Beaty and the Beast. The story of Sleeping Beaty was also adapted, with a focus on the villain Maleficent, in Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, The Black Cauldron stars Grant Bardsley, Susan Sheridan, Freddie Jones, Nigel Hawthorne, John Byner, and John Hurt. The film is now streaming on Disney+.
