A new report suggests that the highly-anticipated remake of the beloved JRPG Chrono Cross is being built on a relatively small budget.

According to notable video game industry insider NateDrake, Square Enix's upcoming Chrono Cross game will be more than a slightly updated remaster, but won't be to the scale of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Writing on the online forum ResetEra, NateDrake notes, "It's not a high budget release. But I don't believe it's a simple remaster ala FF8." The leaker is referring to the remastered version of Final Fantasy VIII which launched in September 2019. They continue on to say that they've only heard "minor things" and their information is likely subject to change.

Little is currently known about the remake of Chrono Cross. Speculation on the game began when a listing for it was discovered in a leak that exposed a database of games coming to the Nvidia GeForce Now service. Fuel was thrown onto the fire when Nick Baker, co-founder of XboxEra, stated during a podcast, "Chrono Cross Remastered, I think, was already on the Nivida leak list, so the game shouldn’t be a surprise – it was on Nvidia’s list." He went on to say, "What else I was told—because everyone’s working under the assumption that it’s a PlayStation exclusive—I’ve been told that it’s not. The only word that was used was ‘multiplat’."

Considering that the original Chrono Cross launched as a PlayStation exclusive, speculation around the remake was that it would only be available on Sony consoles. Baker insisted that this isn't the game, stating, "I think there’s confusion because it says that PlayStation is set to announce it, so everyone just works under the assumption that PlayStation is announcing something that would exclusive, which they don’t always do. Pragmata isn’t exclusive, they’ve announced plenty of stuff [that isn’t exclusive]."

Neither Square Enix nor Sony has acknowledged the rumors of Chrono Cross Remastered. The companies recently had a great deal of success with the launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which launched in 2020. The complete reimagining of the classic PlayStation role-playing game was met by almost universal praise as fans and critics lauded Final Fantasy VII Remake's stylish graphics, improved combat system and surprising changes made to the narrative.
