Initially released in 2012, the Made in Abyss manga series follows an orphan girl named Riko on a mission to find her mother -- who is presumed dead -- after she descends into a giant hole deep in the Earth called the Abyss.

In addition to being adapted as an action-role playing game and digital publication, Made in Abyss spawned the 2017 anime TV series Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City, and a sequel film called Dawn of the Deep Soul, which premiered in Japan in January 2020.

Set after the events of the feature-length film, Season 2 of the series is scheduled to arrive in 2022. The new season will be accompanied by a new 3D action role-playing game based on the series, titled Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness.

It was also recently confirmed that Dawn of the Deep Soul will make its streaming debut on the HIDIVE anime streaming service. The stream will begin at 5 p.m. UTC on Monday, June 28, and will be available to HIDIVE subscribers in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Central America and South America. Viewers will have the option of watching the film with either Japanese or English audio.

McMullin is the founder of the NYC-based production company Boy & Star. He wrote and directed his first feature Low Tide, which was released theatrically by A24 after premiering in competition at Tribeca. McMullin will next release a feature called First Harvest and is also currently working on an original monster movie for Amazon Studios.

It's unclear at this time when the live-action Made in Abyss film will begin production.
