The summer 2020 anime season is getting into full swing, and high on the hype list is the new romantic comedy Rent-A-Girlfriend. Based on the popular Shōnen manga series by Reiji Miyajima, Rent-A-Girlfriend will begin airing July 10 on Crunchyroll. A story with many twists and turns, some harem elements and plenty of hijinks among the cast, Rent-A-Girlfriend is here to sate all your romcom desires.

The story follows 20 year-old college student Kazuya Kinoshita, who has been unceremoniously dumped by his girlfriend after a month of dating. Feeling spiteful, he finds an online app called "Diamond" that rents out women for non-physical relationships and meets the stylishly beautiful and elegant Chizuru Mizuhara. The two go out on a date and have a wonderful time. Chizuru seems to be the perfect girlfriend, until Kazuya gets on the app to read her reviews and sees that she is just putting up the same act she does for all her clients.

Kazuya decides to embarrass her by leaving a negative review, which sparks a heated argument between the two. As this is happening, Kazuya receives word that his grandmother collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital. He rushes to visit her and brings Chizuru along, and his grandmother takes an immediate liking to his new "girlfriend." Not having the heart to tell her the truth, Kazuya is forced to continue dating Chizuru. Will a genuine romance blossom out of all this craziness or will they eventually come clean about why they're together?

The anime is directed by Kazuomi Koga (Pokemon XY, Rainy Cocoa, Welcome to Rainy Color) at TMS Entertainment with character design by Kanna Hirayama (Sword Art Online, Hanamonogatari). Protagonist Kazuya will be voiced by Shun Horie (My Roommate Is a Cat) while Chizuru is voiced by Sora Amamiya (Akame Ga Kill, Konosuba). The ongoing manga series is also being published in English by Kodansha Comics, with Volume 1 released in June 2020.

The blend of comedy, romance and romantic entanglements combine with a self-deprecating protagonist who describes himself as a loser. It'll be fascinating to see how all these elements balance each other out as the characters and their relationships evolve. Will love bloom among all the secrecy and deception or will it all be too much for Kazuya to handle? If one thing's for certain, Rent-A-Girlfriend should be quite the roller coaster ride.
