An iconic poster, originally published in 1992 to coincide with "The Death of Superman," is receiving a touching homage via a new variant cover tying in with DC's 30th-anniversary celebration of the iconic story.

Ivan Reis and Danny Miki's "Funeral for a Friend" variant for The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 hits comic book store shelves in November. The cover shows Lois Lane in front of a memorial dedicated to the Man of Steel, holding the tattered remains of Superman's cape, which was destroyed in his climactic battle against Doomsday. The living legends of the DC Universe stand behind her. These heroes are noticeably sporting the black S armbands that originally appeared in comics across the DC line in the aftermath of Superman's death. In a nod to history, all of them are also wearing their '90s outfits.

The cover homages a promo poster also entitled "Funeral for a Friend," illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding, and released to promote the original "The Death of Superman" story arc. The poster featured a similar lineup of characters wearing black armbands, but saw the likes of Atom, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Robin and Wonder Woman carrying Superman's casket in the foreground instead of centering Lois Lane. The image was repurposed countless times for retail posters, trading cards and trade paperbacks. Jurgens revealed in a 2018 tweet that, on some versions, Beast Boy and Shazam replaced Batman and Robin due to licensing restrictions.

The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 features four new stories revolving around Clark Kent's death and debuts a new villain named Doombreaker. The special also reunites creators who worked on the original storyline, including Breeding, Butch Guide, Jurgens, Jon Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway, Louis Simonson, Roger Stern, Tom Grummett and others. Aside from Reis and Miki's "Funeral for a Friend" homage, several other variant covers by big names in comics -- including Jim Lee, Dan Mora and Francesco Mattina -- will be available.

DC will release a special reprint of Superman #75, the issue that saw the Man of Steel killed by Doomsday, on Nov. 1. The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 follows this release, on Nov. 8. A new omnibus edition collecting all issues of the story as well as supplementary material, dubbed The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, goes on sale Dec. 6.
