Redbox announced that it will no longer offer video game rentals at its kiosks. Customers can now only purchase games from the iconic red stands, but it seems that option will be gone soon as well.

The company made the announcement on Twitter while responding to a user's question about the lack of rental options. "Hey, there! Games will continue to be available for purchase at the Box until early next year, but we’re no longer making them available to rent," the tweet reads. It is unclear when exactly Redbox will stop selling video games entirely.

The rental halt is nationwide, but customers that rented games before the stoppage began are still obligated to return them at the appropriate time.

The discontinuation of Redbox's video game rental service is another nail in the coffin of retail gaming, as the industry shifts to digital. Every major video game company now sells their games digitally, making it difficult for brick-and-mortar video game shops to stay in business. GameStop, the world's largest gaming retailer, has been struggling with this issue as well. The video game chain plans on closing 200 stores by the end of the fiscal year.

Furthermore, with platforms like Google Stadia and Playstation Now taking the Netflix approach to video games, it seems like it is only a matter of time before GameStop and RedBox suffer the same fate as Blockbuster.
