After wandering through development hell for the past several years, "Red Sonja" may once again be ready for action.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nu Image/Millennium Films has hired "The Fall" writer Christopher Cosmos to try his hand at a new screenplay. No director or actors are attached to the project.

Loosely based on character from author Robert E. Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture," Red Sonja was introduced by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in a 1973 issue of Marvel Comics' "Conan the Barbarian." She was played by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 that co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan.

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez began work on a new Red Sonja film, targeted for 2010 release, but that failed to materialize after the intended star -- his then-girlfriend Rose McGowan -- suffered some injuries. In 2011 Simon West planned to make the film with Amber Heard, but that too failed to get off the ground.
