Dynamite Entertainment has officially announced a new Red Sonja ongoing series, with acclaimed writer/artist Mirka Andolfo (Mercy, Sweet Paprika) at the helm.
Mirka Andolfo's Red Sonja is slated to launch this September. The series is written by Andolfo and Luca Blengino, and illustrated by Andolfo's longtime colleague Giuseppe Cafaro (Sacred Six). Andolfo, Blengino and Cafaro are joined on the project by colorist Chiara Di Francia, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and editor Nate Cosby.
According to Dynamite, "no series by Mirka is complete without her own wonderful art." As such, Andolfo leads a group of cover artists that also includes Jay Anacleto, Joseph Michael Linsner, Erica D'Urso and Brett Booth. Additionally, Mirka Andolfo's Red Sonja #1 features a cosplay variant starring Tabitha Lyons, as well as a blank sketch variant.
"Red Sonja is an extraordinary, multifaceted character, and I loved her from the first moment," said Andolfo. "When I was asked to try to make my own version of her, I immediately accepted." Mirka Andolfo's Red Sonja kicks off the "Mother" arc, which touches on "themes that fans of Mirka's other works starring strong female characters will immediately recognize and latch onto."
The "Mother" arc begins with "a village burning to the ground, set aflame by the dreaded Three-Eyed Shezem." When the She-Devil with a Sword arrives on the scene, she finds only one survivor, "a young child with mysterious white tattoos." Red Sonja and her new companion set off on an "arduous journey through frigid snow plains and thick forests," facing "all manner of threats" along the way. "In a quest to seek justice, as well as answers to the many mysteries in the series. Can Sonja save this child's life and figure out what happened?"
Written by Mirka Andolfo and Luca Blengino and illustrated by Giuseppe Cafaro, with colors by Chiara Di Francia and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Mirka Andolfo's Red Sonja #1 goes on sale this September from Dynamite Entertainment.
