Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of the upcoming film Red Noticewants to return to the Dodgeball universe and have Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds star.

In an interview with Deadline, Thurber explained that revisiting Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, which he also directed, could be good fun. "You know what — never say never. I never thought about Dodgeball as a series, but that actually might be fun," he explained. "I’m really proud of Dodgeball — it’s my first film and something people still really like it seems. I would say never say never, and it would have to be the right take on it. But yeah, maybe."

The comment comes after Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox catalog back in 2019. The company has started to relaunch some of the popular franchises it now owns; for example, the upcoming release Home Sweet Home Alone will serve as the sixth installment in the Home Alone series. Other popular 20th Century properties will also see new entries, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which has an upcoming Disney+ exclusive film.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story was released in 2005 and starred Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor and Rip Torn. The movie grossed a worldwide total of $167.7 million and received strong reviews from critics and audiences, holding a 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel was rumored around 2013, but Ben Stiller confirmed a few years later that a follow-up was not in the works.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is now streaming on Disney+. Red Notice arrives Nov. 12 on Netflix.
