Warner Bros. is seeking to expand its DC content on HBO Max, and Red Hood may be the next character to get a solo film on the streaming service.

According to That Hashtag Show, a Red Hood film script is in the works. The movie would adapt the comic story "A Death in the Family," which saw Jason Todd killed by the Joker after readers voted for the second Robin's demise. The character would resurface years later as the violent vigilante Red Hood, who would ironically become a fan-favorite anti-hero. The movie would somehow condense all of this by following the perspectives of Todd, Batman, Nightwing, the Joker, and the GCPD. It will also reportedly connect to Chris McKay's long-in-development Nightwing and feature that same actor.

While no director has officially signed on, the report says WB is eyeing Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah), Robert Machoian (God Bless the Child), and Rose Glass (Saint Maud). For the lead, Cobra Kai's Tanner Buchanan is apparently the favorite.

Written by Jim Starlin with art by Jim Aparo, Mike DeCarlo, John Costanza, and Adrienne Roy, "A Death in the Family" is one of DC's most infamous stories. Published in 1988, the story takes place in Batman #426–429 and sees Todd go off on his own, against the Dark Knight's wishes. He ends up being brutally murdered by the Joker, which was met with backlash despite the second Robin's unpopularity. The character would reappear years later in the real world when Batman: Under the Red Hood arrived in 2005 and introduced the gun-wielding anti-hero who would both work with and against his former mentor.

The story was partially adapted in the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood, which focuses more on Todd's return than his original death. This season of Titans on HBO Max also put its own spin on Joker killing Jason Todd, only for him to resurface as the villainous Red Hood. And for years, fans have been hoping to see Jensen Ackles play the live-action character, though he's an unlikely choice at this point.

While the character's popularity doesn't make the move too surprising, the interesting part of the report is that the movie will connect to Nightwing. McKay has said he still wants to make the film, which was first announced in 2017, but there's been no real indication that it's still a priority for Warner Bros. Another question surrounding the film is whether it will connect to the Zack Snyder's movies, as Batman v Superman teased the death of a Robin at the hands of Joker.
