In the upcoming Gotham Knights, players can choose from all four members of the Bat-Family: Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl and Red Hood. This is interesting in its own right since the Dark Knight himself has often been the only playable character of Gotham based video games, outside of very specific missions or short DLC. But while the prospect of playing as any of these heroes as the main character is more than exciting, none offer quite as much potential and uniqueness as Red Hood.

An antihero among Batman's allies, Red Hood is distinctly darker and more unpredictable than the other three heroes. In most of his appearances, both in comics and animated films, he is seldom portrayed as entirely good, especially not in comparison to figures like Bruce Wayne. He even opposes Batman on many occasions, serving as an antagonist force in many arcs.

While the outlaw tends to work alone, the prospect of him teaming up with the rest of Batman's students makes for incredibly interesting dynamics. While his fellow former sidekicks look to Bruce Wayne as a role model, Jason actively rejects his philosophy and methods. Most notably, Red Hood has always been critical of Batman's refusal to kill his enemies and is more than willing to execute criminals without hesitation. How each personality will play into the overlying story of the game is yet to be determined, but seeing as all four serve as main characters, there's sure to be a number of interesting situations and exchanges Red Hood will have with his new partners.

From a gameplay perspective, Red Hood also has the potential to stand out the most. Notably, he's always been known to be particularly brutal with his fighting techniques, utilizing lots of lethal tactics mixed into the usual martial arts. Most distinctly, he incorporates guns into his combat, which should make for some interesting moments when he's finally playable in Gotham Knights.

This isn't the first time Red Hood has been a playable character, as both Injustice 2 and Batman: Arkham Knight featured the character. What Injustice 2's iteration showed was the arsenal Red Hood had at his disposal and the multiple ways it could be utilized in video game combat. From explosives to electrically charged pistol grips and even throwing stars of his own, he was a unique character that stood out in the roster. While his appearance in Arkham Knight was just a small, 10-minute DLC side story, it showed off the immense potential the character had in its style of game. It was especially interesting to see the small changes made to his kit, such as the ground pound Batman uses being replaced by a simple pistol execution and silent takedowns ending with gruesome neck snaps. Despite this, it was still just Batman combat and stealth missions with a bit of added flair.

Now, for perhaps the first time, Gotham Knights will feature Red Hood in a game with levels designed around his specific skill set and abilities. With the game's release slated for sometime next year, fans will have to wait and see whether it utilizes Red Hood to his full potential.
