A leaker revealed that Rockstar once debated whether to remaster two of its classics -- Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV -- but ultimately decided against the move."As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA IV and RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind," said Rockstar expert Tez2 on Twitter. "The poor reception of the Trilogy DE might be a reason behind that decision." The "Trilogy DE" refers to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition, a remastered compilation of three earlier GTA games -- GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas and GTA III. Upon its release in Fall 2021, GTA: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition turned out to be a buggy mess and soon became one of the worst-reviewed games of all time.RELATED: Former GTA V Illustrator Reinvents Video Games as Vintage Comic Book Covers

Both GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption remain beloved, groundbreaking classics that pushed gaming forward both technically and artistically, so the news of the canceled remasters was almost universally disappointing to fans in the comments. Many expressed the sentiment that if Rockstar had messed up with The Trilogy - DE, the developer should learn from its mistakes and do better with future remasters rather than give up on them entirely. Others pointed out that, despite its flaws, The Trilogy - DE still sold over 10 million copies, so perhaps there was another reason behind Rockstar's decision.

Remasters and reboots are becoming more and more popular in the video game industry, with many developers trying, in particular, to emulate Capcom's recent success with its remasters of early Resident Evil titles. A remake of Resident Evil 4, widely considered the best game in the series, was confirmed at the Sony State of Play in June. The RE 4 remake comes after Capcom remade Resident Evil 2 and 3 to much acclaim.

Other major remakes on the horizon include The Last of Us, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Max Payne. Many upcoming remakes will offer PC gamers their first chance to try a specific title on current or next-gen consoles. Due to the popularity of remakes and reboots, many fans expressed interest in seeing their favorite titles get the same treatment. While the first Red Dead Redemption might not get a remaster any time soon, its prequel, Red Dead Revolver, seems a common choice for gamers for a reboot.

The Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series are available on most console and PC platforms.
