"Free Comic Book Day is a wonderful event for independently owned and operated comic book shops," FCBD spokesperson Dan Manser said in a statement. "It provides them a great opportunity to connect with new and existing customers and gain momentum moving into the summer months and the rest of 2016."

Dozens of publishers will participate in the event, with Marvel, DC Comics and others taking advantage of the increased level of interest to promote major storylines and new series.

This year's Free Comic Book Day takes place on May 7.
