Zack Snyder has found his next project, one that he initially wanted to take to the galaxy far, far away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder will direct, co-write and produce the sci-fi epic Rebel Moon for Netflix. The film originally started as a pitch for a Star Wars movie the director developed 10 years ago. A darker take on George Lucas' universe, the film was sidelined after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. Snyder flirted with the idea of making it a series before he and Netflix reached a deal.

"This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan," Snyder said. "It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out." Production is expected to begin in 2022.

The film will follow a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the warlord Balisarius. Desperate to rid their home of their reign, the townspeople send a young woman with a mysterious past to find warriors from nearby planets to help them make a stand.

"I've spent the last two or three years building out this universe," Snyder added. Every corner has to be painted in. I've been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized."

Rebel Moon continues Snyder's partnership with Netflix, which began with Army of the Dead earlier this summer. Snyder is also working on an Army of the Dead prequel, Army of Thievesand the Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas anime series. He also has an anime series based on Norse mythology in the works for the streamer.
