After eight years, Ernest Cline finally published the much awaited sequel to his debut novel Ready Player One, titled Ready Player Two. Much like its predecessor, Ready Player Two will soon receive a film adaptation according to Cline.

"It’s in the early stages right now, especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now," Cline told Inverse during an interview. "But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun. We talked about the possibility of there being a Ready Player Two when we were making Ready Player One. In Hollywood you never know. I really tried my best to focus on just writing a sequel to my book. There are characters in the movie that are alive that aren’t alive in the book. I focused on trying to give fans the book without letting the film influence me. The movie will sort itself out later."

Ready Player One centered around the adventures of Wade Watts in a possible near future. Wade utilizes the immersive virtual reality system known as the OASIS to win a contest launched by long-dead tech genius James Halliday. Ready Player Two picks up shortly after the end of Ready Player One, with Wade discovering Halliday's last invention and being launched into another quest. Ready Player Two received mixed reception upon its debut in November, with many criticisms leveled at the plot and characters.

Ready Player One was adapted into a movie in 2018, with Steven Spielberg directing and Cline co-writing the screenplay with Zak Penn (The AvengersAlphas). Cline's other novel Armada is also being developed as a film by Universal Pictures.

The novel Ready Player Two is available to purchase digitally and in bookstores.
