In 2019's Absolute Carnage event, Cletus Kasady went to war with the entire Marvel Universe. In a bid to awaken Knull, the god of the symbiotes, Cletus proceeded to collect the codex of everyone who had ever bonded with a symbiote before. These codices were essentially a fragment of symbiotes left behind in anyone who was ever a host for a Klyntar. To collect them, Carnage had to rip into the spine of his targets, the most common location of these codices. Throughout the event, Carnage ripped through countless bodies, both alive and dead, to collect more pieces of the Klyntar.

One of Carnage's targets was Mac Gargan. While the character is mostly known as the Spider-Man villain Scorpion, Mac also had a brief stint as Venom. And in Donny cates and Ryan Stegman's Absolute Carnage #2, Carnage ripped into his spleen to steal his codex. Thankfully, Miles Morales swooped in at just the right time to save Mac's life, but the damage was already done. As he was carried away, Mac revealed he could no longer feel his legs. This seemed to set the stage for the Scorpion to adopt a look more similar to the one he had in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While we didn't find out Mac Gargan's ultimate status in the Absolute Carnage series, the status of Mac Gargan was made clear in Ravencroft #3.

Absolute Carnage Scorpion injury

During the battle with Carnage, the Ravencroft Institute was destroyed and, once the dust had settled, Wilson Fisk made sure the asylum for the criminally insane would be rebuilt better and stronger than ever. To ensure total control of the facility, Fisk even personally chose the Institute's staff -- and it included a quartet of dangerous villains: Taskmaster, Moonstone, Hobgoblin, and Scorpion.

While they were all hired as part of the Institute's medical staff, it isn't long before the supervillains suit up. In Ravencroft #3, the villains get ready for a fight when monstrous creatures known as the Unwanted make their presence known. The four staff members, as well as Fisk, head underground to the Unwanted's lair, and it's there that we see Mac Gargan's new Scorpion look. Since he is paralyzed from the waist down, he uses in a hi-tech wheelchair that's similar in size to Professor X's floating chair. In fact, Mac reveals that this chair is a modified version of Alistair Smythe's chair.

This version comes with its own massive scorpion tail ready to shoot the character's trademark blasts -- but that's not all. The chair also has multiple other canon blasters, and it lifts off the ground thanks to mechanized spider-like legs. This essentially allows Mac to fully embody his codename, arguably more faithfully than ever before.

In execution, this look is indeed similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the animated film, Scorpion also has mechanized spider legs. However, the comic book version of this look is rooted in Spider-Man lore, and it remains true to the character's original look and history.

Even though he was badly hurt in Absolute Carnage, the Scorpion continues to be a menace. And with his new equipment, the Spider-Man villain might even be more frightening and dangerous than he ever was before.
