A new Ratchet & Clank game is reportedly in development for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5, which releases later this year.

According to video game podcaster and former IGN editor Colin Moriarty, Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment have plans in place for the new game. "We're going to get a Ratchet and Clank in-between [Spider-Man 2018 and its sequel] on PlayStation 5," Moriarty said on his podcast, Sacred Symbols+. "I feel like that's going to be a launch game, the Ratchet and Clank game that's long been in development at Insomniac."

This latest version of the Ratchet & Clank series would be the first new addition to the franchise since 2016, which saw a remake of the game released on PlayStation 4. In addition games for consoles, the franchise released installments on mobile platforms and handheld devices, with a total of 16 games in the series, including collections and spinoffs.

2016 also saw the release of a movie based on the video game IP, which starred James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorn, Rosario Dawson and Sylvester Stallone. Insomniac Games helped with production, screenplay and animation for the final film.

Insomniac Games created the well-received Spider-Man game on PlayStation 4. It is speculated that, although they have two significant Sony properties, they aren't tackling them one at a time. Instead, the company has likely split their staff into two teams to work on the games concurrently, which would allow them to release two major titles when the new console is released.
