A rare near-mint copy of Marvel's Amazing Fantasy #15, featuring the 1962 debut of Spider-Man, sold at auction Thursday for $454,100.

Heritage Auctions said that's the most ever paid at public auction for a Spider-Man comic (as The Associated Press notes, a near-mint copy of the same comic reportedly fetched $1.1 million in a private sale in 2011).

Although the buyer of the 9.4-graded edition wished to remain anonymous, we do know who sold it: 60-year-old Walter Yakaboski of Middle Island, New York, who  picked up the comic in 1980 for $1,200. Recently laid off from his job as a baker, Yakboski plans to use proceeds from the sale of Amazing Fantasy #15 and a few other vintage comics to maintain ownership of the family farm he and his brother inherited a couple of years ago.

“You can’t hold on to something forever,” he recently told the Riverhead News-Review.
