Aquaman (a.k.a. Arthur Curry) has been making waves ever since the DC superhero debuted with his own solo film last year. The movie, aptly titled Aquaman, gave us a taste of what the future of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) would be like from that point on. Suffice to say, we want more. More Aquaman movies would be better and should hopefully be enough to... submerge DCEU's blunders with Batman and Superman.

Of course, appreciating Aquaman is easier if you understand his rogues' gallery. While his enemies may not be as clear cut as Superman's or as interesting as Batman's, they're still quite formidable. Moreover, they work well to complement the Atlantean King and Justice League member. Here are 10 of them to remind you that the ocean is a dangerous place.

10 FISHERMAN

The Fisherman, despite his bland name, is a worthy opponent to Aquaman. He's pretty much a discount Black Manta, but more enigmatic and mysterious. It's not just fish he's after, but also hi-tech Atlantean equipment, just to sell it on the black market. When not thieving around, Fisherman uses his impressive intellect to invent various baits and bombs as well as weapons.

Speaking of weapons, Fisherman's choice is, as you may have guessed, a fishing rod. It's no joke-- it has a razor-sharp tip and a titanium line that can be used to entangle the Fisherman's victims. Oddly enough, Fisherman's identity is never truly revealed, yet he keeps appearing to fight Aquaman like some masked desperado.

9 NEREUS

Atlantis somehow still retained its monarchy system of governance even in the modern world, which makes for a troublesome power struggle for Aquaman. He has enemies left and right, some of which are also his royal subjects. Nereus is one of them and he's quite a thorn on Aquaman's side (do note that the Nereus in the comic books is different from King Nereus in DCEU's Aquaman film).

Nereus, being an Atlantean himself, shares the same physiology and capabilities as Arthur Curry. Oh, and he's also Mera's first romantic interest. In fact, Nereus, being the King of the underwater kingdom of Xebel, sent Mera to kill Aquaman. However, Mera didn't. She even became attracted to Arthur, much to Nereus' displeasure.

8 CHARYBDIS

Later versions of Aquaman in the comic books have shown him with only one real hand and, while there are many versions of the tale of how he lost that hand, one of them was because of Charybdis. Despite his name, he's not actually a monster from Greek mythology. That's just the codename he took during his eco-warrior (not the good kind) stint with his wife, codenamed Scylla.

It's not clear what his metahuman powers really were, but he stole some of them from Aquaman using a device he built. That was also when Aquaman lost his arm. It appears Charybdis' main asset is his ability to absorb the powers and spirit of others. He even once fell into a pool of piranhas and was able to absorb their spirits, which he used to transform into Piranha Man afterwards.

7 THE THIRST

No, he's not a villain borne out of fans' Jason Momoa thirst tweets, though it's pretty close. The Thirst is actually a golem made out of mud that can magically assume a humanoid form. True to his name, however, he poses a threat not just to Aquaman, but also to the Earth, for his tendency to drain the rivers of the Earth (just because he can).

In essence, the Thirst is more of a parasite, who wants to absorb magical water and the life force of others. He's actually one of the few enemies who gave Aquaman a fight he cannot win, since he just keeps absorbing him. He only defeated the Thirst after letting another stronger being (the light of the universe) consume the golem.

6 THE TRENCH

Since Aquaman's domain is the Earth's waters, it's only fitting that some of his enemies are grotesque Lovecraftian horrors. The Trench is just that, but it's not exactly made up of a powerful individual. Rather, the Trench is a population of ocean-dwelling creatures that are as evil as they are ugly. They were also featured in the Aquaman film.

They're not your typical school of fish, either. The Trench is nigh-unstoppable in swarms and Aquaman generally avoids them. It seems they are quite immune to Aquaman's telepathy, meaning they obey nothing and no-one but their primal desire to feed. If the ocean had a swarm of locusts that exist only to serve as a pestilence, it would be the Trench.

5 TRITON

If you think the Atlantean royalty is a headache, wait until you see how entitled the gods are. Triton, as some of you might have already known, is the son of the Greek god Poseidon, whose domain is the sea. As such, Triton believes he also has a claim to his father's territory and has made it his own divine spot... well, not exactly a spot; it's like 70 percent of the Earth.

Triton, however, grew enraged that the Atlantean monarchy is more feared and respected than he. So, he challenged Aquaman, but lost to him since he didn't have as many followers as before. Basically, Triton's your typical Instagram influencer. Poseidon, his father, considered such a defeat at the hands of a mortal humiliating, so he struck Aquaman blind (temporarily) so he wouldn't witness a deity being shamed.

4 SIREN

There are actually two versions of Siren in the Aquaman rogues' gallery, but the second one (introduced in the New 52 reboot) is more powerful. Her real name is Hila and she's Mera's sister, technically Aquaman's sister-in-law. Like many people, Aquaman is also not on good terms with his in-laws, and Hila has made it her goal to make Aquaman's marriage and tenure as king a living hell.

Siren (or Hila) has the same water-manipulation powers as her sister, but as an added bonus, she can also shapeshift. In fact, she actually once impersonated Mera and drove Aquaman out of the kingdom for saving some refugees. Apart from being near-equal to Aquaman in terms of abilities, she's also a grand schemer and will take any chance she gets to usurp Arthur Curry.

3 THE DEAD KING

Yet again, another who wants the throne of Atlantis. The Dead King (from the New 52 reboot) is a remnant of the old Atlantis before the kingdom even sank. It was King Atlan who sunk his great nation into the depths of the ocean, after it fell into discord. Somehow, the Dead King came back to life and was awakened with every intention of reclaiming what was once his.

Since he's the first and greatest King of Atlantis, he's a lot more powerful than Aquaman. In addition to his godlike abilities, he can also control ice and his influence on the Atlanteans has proven to be strong. Upon his return, the kingdom of Xebel sided with him, recognizing him as a true claimant to the throne. The fight against him was so intense that Aquaman fainted and the Dead King could have taken Atlantis, if not for Mera saving Aquaman.

2 BLACK MANTA

While most of Aquaman's most dangerous enemies are his own kin vying for control of Atlantis, Black Manta (David Kane) just wants one thing from Aquaman: his corpse. Aquaman was responsible for Kane's father's death and he took it personally. He's also one of the few Aquaman enemies who's just a human being... but with the same determination as Batman.

With his treasure-hunting skills and incredible intellect, Kane was able to create his own weapons and the iconic Manta suit to match Aquaman. Additionally, he's no stranger to fighting and assassinations. Manta has actually come close to killing Aquaman many times and even endangering his family. For that, he's considered to be Aquaman's archnemesis.

1 OCEAN MASTER

While Aquaman eats threats for breakfast every day (with the likes of Black Manta breathing down his neck), none of them have ever come close to the worldwide menace that is Ocean Master (Orm), Aquaman's half-brother. Orm has gone through many iterations throughout the years. However, he still remains the biggest danger to the throne of Atlantis, to Aquaman, and even the surface world.

He was one of the few Atlantean royals able to successfully usurp the throne. In the new 52 version and Aquaman film, he also waged war on humanity in order to fully control the Earth. To make matters worse, Aquaman actually loves his half-brother. That complicates things, since he can't just get rid of Orm. The best he can do to him was imprison him on land; there, he felt like a fish out of water.
