Star Wars has featured a lot of different soldiers over the years. While some of them are hilariously incompetent to the point of parody, others such as the Range Troopers are actually fearsome figures. With their unique equipment, the Range Troopers are some of the most dangerous Stormtroopers, even if they've only appeared in one Star Wars film so far.

THE EMPIRE

The Galactic Empire was controlled by Emperor Palpatine. He initially spread his power by utilizing a clone army to wage war across the galaxy. After the Clone Wars, they became the first generation of Stormtroopers, the soldiers of the Empire. But after his stranglehold was established, the clone army fell away -- their artificially advanced lifetimes aging them at an extreme rate and their fighting skills quickly eroded. The Empire turned to recruits -- both volunteered and occasionally conscripted -- to fill out the ranks.

While the Stormtroopers became quickly derided for their overall lack of skills compared to the clone army (who were capable of surprising and killing the majority of the Jedi Order), there were some squadrons of the troopers who achieved different ranks and titles depending on their skill sets. This includes the destructive Flametroopers, the high-class Shock Troopers and the fearsome Death Troopers. For certain weather situations though, it's best to call upon the Range Troopers.

RANGE TROOPERS

Range Troopers are deployed primarily to hostile environments. Their heavy fur-lined armor allows them to survive in adverse conditions where other troopers would be otherwise unable to survive. They were essentially the US Marines of the Galactic Empire. Only the toughest recruits could graduate to become Range Troopers, which even led some of them to look upon the rest of the Stormtroopers with a certain amount of disrespect and disdain.

They are equipped with advanced armor to assist this cause and strong blasters. Their most unique tool is a pair of massive magnetic boots. These allow the Range Troopers to attach themselves to ships and other vehicles, giving them a steady ground even hundreds of miles below them. The only notable one introduced so far has been Denwade Banevans, who was one of the primary leaders of the Ranger Troopers in their only cinematic appearance.

THE TRAIN JOB

Range Troopers have only really appeared as threats in Solo: A Star Wars Story, a spin-off prequel centered around the young days of Han Solo. His first mission as a smuggler was as a member of Tobias Beckett's crew of space pirates. The Range Troopers were sent to protect a railcrawler transporting a large amount of the ship fuel Coaxium. The Range Troopers (led by Denwade Banevans) confronted Tobias and his men aboard the vehicle, opening fire on them in an attempt to protect the Coaxium.

The troopers were able to engage Han Solo (alongside his new friend Chewbacca) aboard the train. But the crew's plan to disconnect the fuel from the rest of the train so they can steal it is successful, despite their magnetic boots allowing them to easily remain as a part of the train. The Range Troopers were then taken out by the invading Cloud-Riders. Unlike most Stormtroopers, it at least took an extended battle and a surprise attack to take out the Range Troopers, proving they are at least more effective and dangerous than most versions of the Troopers.
