Random Thoughts! (April 5, 2011)

Random Thought! "Whatever you do, don't tell anyone." It's random thoughts time! Get excited!

Link Thought!GraphiContent for comics. butterbeatleblog for popculture. The Splash Page Podcast for some awesome comics discussion.

Random Thought! My final word on recap pages: I just wish they were always accurate. What's the point of having them if they get story details wrong? Because some reviewers may read them when they're reviewing a comic they don't normally read and believe what's written there and then regular readers say horrible things about those reviewers when they make factual mistakes in their reviews. Come on, people!

Random Thought! Jason Aaron writing X-Men: Scism has me intrigued.

Random Thought! Warren Ellis writing Secret Avengers is lovely.

Random Thought! Some of those Green Lantern movie pics I've seen remind me of computer-generated comics that look like ass.

Random Thought! Sometimes, you find the right words in your comic reviews... this week was one of those times.

Random Thought! My favourite part of Jimmy Olsen #1 was the mocking of the Superman comics that don't feature Superman.

Random Thought! I know I shouldn't, but I do want to buy Beckett on Film. Too bad it's pretty expensive. Also, how is there not a DVD available of Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen in Waiting for Godot? I would buy that without thinking. Not a lot of stage performances warrant a video recording, but that one does.

Random Thought! Someday, I hope Brian Cronin reveals his true, mean as hell side to you all... he's awesome.

Random Thought! My new Mile High order just arrived, which is shockingly quick. It just shipped on Thursday. Normally, I'd have to wait another week or two. Awesome.

Random Thought! "I am baceteria. I am the lowest form of life. I am a super hero." I read this shit when I was a little kid. Over and over and over and over again. Marshal Law, motherfuckers!

Random Thought! I'm in a period of Too Much Awesome. New comics, some old comics, Pinball, 1973 by Haruki Murakami, various DVDs... my life is pretty great sometimes. But, Michelle is sick, which sucks.

Random Thought! I admit, there is some trepidation in rereading Marshal Law after so long... childhood memories shouldn't be fucked with sometimes. But, I'm confident in this one holding up.

Random Thought! I voted Thor over Batman.

Random Thought! I thoroughly enjoyed Butcher Baker, the Righteous Maker #1. If you're not buying this series, well... well, fuck, I don't know what. How can you not be buying this series? (Unless you're like Tim and don't pre-order things and, then, are surprised when your shop doesn't have any copies. Silly, Tim...)

Random Thought! Scott Snyder brought it on Detective Comics #875. Francesco Francavilla was just a bonus. For me, at least.

Random Thought! Hmm... Original Sins a couple of weeks back, Pandemonium in the mail today, Blood Brothers this week... guess I'm starting to see what Jamie Delano on Hellblazer is like.

Random Thought! I both love and hate the 'Martini Edition' of Darwyn Cooke's two Parker graphic novels. Love, because deluxe hardcovers with new material are pretty sweet. Hate, because, fuck, I already bought these! Technically, if you include The Man with the Getaway Face, I'd have one part of this three times. Ha.

Random Thought! Fear Itself begins this week. I'm not one of the favoured reviewers who got to read it early. Hell, I'm reading it late, on Thursday.

Random Thought! The real book I'm torn on is that Walt Simonson Thor one with his original art... I don't think I'm in a position to be so decadent with my spending. Maybe I should just buy the trades for his run first. (Read it years ago via my dad's copies...) Actually my next big purchase will be Absolute Planetary volume two.

Random Thought! I write for CBR and even I found this edition of the Gutters funny.

Random Thought! Yeah, Thor #621 was disappointing. The whole Fraction/Ferry run was. Yet, I'm oddly (stupidly?) optimistic for The Mighty Thor.

Random Thought! My verdict on The King of Limbs: sounds nice, good background music, I retain nothing from it.

Random Thought! Sean Witzke made us all look bad this weekend: Killing It and Determined Without Being Ruthless.

Random Thought! Thanos is many things... 'master of death' is not one of them.

Random Comments! Because it's your right as readers to have your say... and my right to make fun of you if I feel like it.

And what was the verdict from your perspective?

buttler said: I’m just surprised that Dance Dance Dance is so near the top of the list. I liked it for sure, but it also definitely read like a sequel to me. First one I read was Wind-Up Bird, which I absolutely loved, and I was also pretty wild about Hard-Boiled Wonderland.

I think Dance Dance Dance takes the ideas of Murakami's first three books and refines them a bit, while also standing on its own. I love how the opening chapter references the events of A Wild Sheep Chase and doesn't get everything right, the way that real memory works. It's one of those things where, at first, you want to get mad at Murakami for getting the details wrong, but, then, realise, no, that's how the character would probably remember things. I finished rereading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle this weekend and enjoyed it quite a bit. The third book lost me a little. It's an abrupt shift that doesn't work as well as Murakami quickens the pace and starts skimming over things.

AS said: Well, everyone has already read and appreciated Original Sins so it’s quite ok to have a new edition stay on the desk unread (though if one has not, I do wonder how it looks like to fresh eyes when Thatcher era is more and more distant…)

I haven't read it yet. I'm missing the Delano run in my Hellblazer collection.

Michael P said: I didn’t even know there was a debate about Tim Drake being gay.

Well, you know, if you don't actually see his penis gain penetration, there's no real way to prove he's not gay... and, even then, there have been cases of gay men having sex with women, so that proves nothing!

Kevin Hellios said: Also, isn’t the Ronin graphic novel dirt cheap? Cheaper than buying the individual issues? Or is this a Ronin other than the Frank Miller series?

The invidual issues were pretty damn cheap.

That's it for this week. Thanks for reading. Later.
