War is coming for John Rambo once again. Writer and star Sylvester Stallone has confirmed plans for a fifth film in the action franchise by revealing a teaser poster containing the title, Rambo V, and a targeted 2019 release date.
Depicting a graffiti-style image of the iconic Vietnam War veteran kneeling with his signature knife, the poster was accompanied by the caption, “Something wicked is coming this way!” Stallone’s post follows a report over the weekend that he was in talks to co-write and direct a fifth installment of the Rambo series.
The action star, and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, is teaming with longtime producing partner Avi Lerner to pen the script, and plans to direct the film after the duo complete work on The Expendables 4, expected to begin production this summer.
Rambo 5 is expected to see the combat veteran living the quiet life on a ranch in Arizona when a friend’s daughter is kidnapped by Mexican cartels, leading John Rambo to descend into violence once again.
Stallone debuted as the character in 1982’s First Blood, based on David Morrell’s 1972 novel about a veteran with PTSD who faces an abusive small-town sheriff. After co-writing and starring in that film, Stallone went on star and co-write its sequels, 1985’s Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1988’s Rambo III and 2008’s Rambo, which he also directed.
Plans for a follow-up to the 2008 film had been in limbo for years, with talk in 2015 of a television adaptation followed by discussions in 2016 a big-screen reboot, both without Stallone’s involvement.
