WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Raised by Wolves Episode 8, "Mass" and Episode 9, "Umbilical," available now on HBO Max.

HBO's Raised by Wolves is certainly a thought-provoking dive into who really deserves to guide humanity into its next chapter. Initially, it's a battle of ideals on Earth between the Mithraic religious cult and the Atheists, but soon enough, weapons of mass destruction factor in. We see wars being fought with choppers, guns, grenades, and of course, a variety of robots including the war machines known as Necromancers, razing the world as the war spreads to Kepler-22b.

And there, we even encounter a giant monolithic structure that could be used to incinerate humans, so it's clear the show will continue to explore both sides arming themselves. However, two new tools have been introduced on the alien world, and they serve very sinister purposes.

THE TAROT CARDS

When Marcus' Mithraic legion entered the cave of their mysterious stalker, they found tarot cards strategically placed. It seemed to tell a story, but they couldn't decode the narrative. Now, Mother stumbles upon cards at her new lair as she connects with Mary and the kids, and we discover they tell the story of Romulus and Remus: two brothers suckled by wolves who ended up helping their grandfather take back his throne.

Romulus would kill Remus, however, and go on to found and rule Rome, but seeing as they were products of a virgin birth, many believe this could be connected to Campion and Mother's unexpected pregnancy. However, as she tries to read the cards to find out more, she witnesses a shocking scene of an alien in a vessel with hooded figures around worshipping. We're not sure if this is Earth or Kepler-22b, or if this is the past or future, but knowledge is indeed power.

Mother's shaken by the hallucinations with theorists believing the cards could be corrupted. The fact Paul hears voices telling him to burn the cards says a lot, and he follows through, thinking the sun god known as Sol is speaking to him. But it could be that malevolent force -- who's also showing various members of the colony different ghosts -- is now using the cards as weapons against those from Earth. Given how threatened the entity is, it may be that the cards can be used against it.

THE ANDROID BLOOD

When Otho, the rapist, is found by Mother, he's kept alive so she could feed off him. She plugs into his body, weaning blood into her so her fetus can absorb it as a source of nutrition, but after she tapped into the cards, the blood flow's reversed. Instead, the android's blood goes into Otho and he gains super-strength, assaulting Mother and Mary's camp.

Luckily, Tempest kills him but still, he came close to murdering others and absconding with her. He seemed impervious to blows as well, but at this point, Mother has no idea her white blood could have such an effect. What's even more important is when Lucius and the religious zealots turn on the crazy Marcus later on, Lucius beats him senseless and stuffs the Necromancer eyes Marcus stole from Mother into his mouth. Marcus chokes on them and is on the verge of death but as he froths from the mouth, rather than spewing blood, white android blood leaks out.

This suggests the blood could mix and grant him abilities like Otho. This opens a new realm of possibility as the show can now explore Mother and Father transferring some of their essence into their kids as a serum. The show has been vague about Mother's true history, but thanks to her pregnancy due to Campion's shady antics, her child will be the new species of hybrid human. So while she's made from dark photons, this bio-organic element within Mother could help the colony, even Mary, to become super-soldiers via transfusion to protect their new pocket of civilization.

Created by Aaron Guzikowski and produced by Ridley Scott, Raised by Wolves stars Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar, Jordan Loughran, Matias Varela, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Aasiya Shah, Ivy Wong and Travis Fimmel. New episodes arrive each Thursday on HBO Max.
