Early God of War Ragnarök sales numbers from the United Kingdom are putting its 2018 predecessor to shame.

Forbes reported that the highly-anticipated Ragnarök sold more physical games in a single day than God of War did in its highest-performing week. This data comes from GfK Chart-Track, whose senior client director, Dorian Bloch, confirmed and offered an optimistic prediction for the game's future. He stated, "God of War Ragnarök will debut at No.1 and is the first cross-gen title in the series." Bloch continued. "Day 1 physical sales were already greater than any other full-week launch sales for other titles in this franchise." While this statistic doesn't factor in digital purchases or markets outside of the UK, it is still an impressive milestone for the game to smash through on release.

Despite its impressive numbers, the sequel to the 2018 smash hit hasn't had a smooth road to development. As recently as a couple of months ago, the God of War Ragnarök's development team expressed concerns that the game would fall flat ahead of the immense hype it had created. As Game Director Eric Williams put it, "They were freaking out three months ago, 'Holy crap, the game's not good. What are we going to do?'"

Ragnarök has plenty of content ready for those looking forward to stepping back into the boots of Kratos and Atreus. Their new adventure takes them across the now-frozen lands of Midgard to new and familiar realms, including unexplored lands such as Svartalfheim, Asgard and Vanaheim. With all nine of the realms available to players, beating Ragnarök can take upwards of 25 hours, with a completion time sitting around 40. However, that count depends on the game's difficulty and the player's skill and curiosity.

The end of God of War saw the Ghost of Sparta and his son, Atreus, grow stronger as father and son. That strength is put to the test three years later as Fimbulwinter, the years-long winter that precedes Ragnarök, comes to an end. The pair rally with what allies they possess to find Tyr, the Norse god of war, and avoid a prophecy that spells doom for them all. Besides fantastic sales numbers, God of War Ragnarök debuted to rave reviews, with many hailing the sequel a triumph.

God of War Ragnarök is now available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
