Writer Rick Remender revealed his 2015 graphic novel Avengers: Rage of Ultron with Jerome Opeña was supposed to lead into his own Avengers run.

"I was going to take over the Avengers after Secret Wars but left to go work on X-Men," Remender wrote on Twitter. "Rage of Ultron was setting up my Avengers stuff." Additionally, he included some pages from Rage of Ultron as drawn by Opeña, who also worked with Remender on The Punisher and Uncanny X-Force, among other projects. Opeña's pages depict a fight between Ultron and his own mechanical progeny Vision.

Instead of launching his own run on the main Avengers title, Remender was supposed to begin writing X-Men, although that also fell through when Remender left the company in 2014. Instead, X-Men was rebranded as All-New X-Men as part of Marvel's All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative and was given to writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Mark Bagley. Nevertheless, Remender is no stranger to the Avengers franchise, having worked on Secret AvengersUncanny AvengersCaptain America and Avengers & X-Men: AXIS.

In Avengers: Rage of Ultron, Ultron took over Titan, the homeworld of the Eternals, after he was exiled to outer space. Starfox, Thanos' brother and a former Avenger, enlisted the Avengers' aid in freeing Titan. The graphic novel also saw Ultron's creator Hank Pym address his warped father-son relationship with the homicidal robot.

Currently, Remender is focusing on his creator-owned comics. He continues to write Deadly Class, Low and Seven to Eternity for Image Comics.
