R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011)

Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor, whose legendary career spanned seven decades and more than 50 films, passed away this morning of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 79.

“We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it,” Taylor’s son Michael Wilding said in a statement. “Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

Taylor made her film debut at age 9 in Universal’s There’s One Born Every Minute and grew up on screen. However, The New York Times notes, she never passed through an awkward stage: “It was one quick leap from National Velvet to A Place in the Sun and from there to Cleopatra as she was indelibly transformed from a vulnerable child actress into a voluptuous film queen.”

She won two Academy Awards for best actress, one in 19960 for Butterfield 8 and another in 1966 for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? At times, though, it seemed the actress’ personal dramas rivaled what played out on film: Taylor was married eight times to seven husbands, becoming Elizabeth Taylor Hilton Wilding Todd Fisher Burton Burton Warner Fortensky.

The New York Times has an extensive obituary and timeline, while The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog looks back at Taylor’s life in photos.
