NBC is officially moving forward with its Quantum Leap sequel series.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, NBC -- the original home of the cult-favorite sci-fi series Quantum Leap -- has given a series order to its planned revival, which stars Raymond Lee (Mozart in the Jungle, Here and Now) in the lead role. The Quantum Leap sequel series received a pilot order at NBC back in January.
According to THR, the Quantum Leap revival pilot recently wrapped production, and the series is expected to air as part of NBC's 2022-2023 fall season. The sci-fi sequel "follows a new team that has been assembled to restart the Quantum Leap project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the accelerator and vanished."
In addition to the aforementioned Lee, the new Quantum Leap stars Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee. Notably, however, original Quantum Leap star Scott Bakula -- who played Dr. Samuel "Sam" Beckett in the '80s and '90s -- is not currently attached to the project.
The Quantum Leap sequel series is produced by Universal Television and written by the duo of Steve Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt (God Friended Me, Alcatraz). Lilien and Wynbrandt will also executive produce the revival alongside Deborah Pratt, Blindspot creator Martin Gero and original Quantum Leap creator Don Bellisario.
Quantum Leap originally aired on NBC for 97 episodes across five seasons from 1989 to 1993. The show followed Bakula's Sam Beckett, a quantum physicist who found himself trapped in the past, "leaping" into the bodies of others as he tried to get back home. Bakula was joined on the show by Dean Stockwell as Albert "Al" Calavicci, the aforementioned Deborah Pratt as Ziggy, Dennis Wolfberg as Irving "Gooshie" Gushman and Candy Ann Brown as Dr. Verbena Beeks.
Back in January 2020, it was reported that NBCUniversal was considering a Quantum Leap revival for its Peacock streaming service. In September 2021, Bakula himself revealed that there were "significant conversations" regarding bringing the show back. These murmurs culiminated in the Quantum Leap sequel recieving its pilot order at NBC earlier this year.
