Nine years after Dreamworks Animation successfully spun off Shrek's Puss in Boots into his own movie, there is movement on a sequel. What's more, an Oscar winner is slated to direct. Bob Persichetti, co-director of the unexpected phenomenon Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, has signed on to ply his award-winning skills to the follow-up.

Persichetti has worked with Dreamworks for many years and was involved in the first Puss in Boots as Head of Story and in a supporting capacity as a voice cast member. Puss in Boots producer Latifa Ouaou will also develop the sequel on behalf of Illumination.

While no release date is slated just yet, principal animation will get underway at Dreamworks' studios in Glendale, California.

Puss first appeared in Shrek 2 and was voiced by Antonio Banderas, who's supplied the voice ever since. He featured in subsequent sequels and shorts before receiving his own animated movie in 2011.

Puss in Boots came out in October of that year and grossed over $550 million worldwide. It starred the vocal talents of Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thorton, Amy Sedaris and Constance Marie.
