Punky Brewster Sequel In the Works, Soleil Moon Frye to Star

In an era where the revival of classic sitcoms has become commonplace, Punky Brewster is now slated to make a comeback.

According to Deadline, a sequel series to Punky Brewster is being developed by the television studio UCP. Furthermore, Soleil Moon Frye will return for the titular role, as well as serve as an executive producer on the series. This will be the first multi-camera/family sitcom by the studio, which previously produced Difficult People, Psych and Happy!

The original sitcom, which premiered in 1984, centered on a little girl named Punky Brewster who was abandoned by her parents. Sneaking into a rundown apartment building, she was eventually taken in by the building manager Henry (George Gaynes) and adopted by him. The original series won several Emmy Awards and was so massively popular, it even received an animated spinoff.

The new series will return to Punky, now a single mother to three children who end up connecting with a young girl who reminds her of herself in her youth. The show will be executive produced by Steve and Jim Armogida (School of Rock), who will also write episodes of the series.
