In the first season of Marvel's The Punisher, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle found an unlikely ally in David Lieberman. Also known as Micro, David was a fugitive whose hacking skills provided the tech support Frank needed on his trail of vengeance. Unfortunately for his fans -- but perhaps fortunately for David himself -- he was nowhere to be found in Season 2.
Showrunner Steven Lightfoot explained the reasoning behind Micro's absence in an interview with CinemaBlend. "I mean, Ebon [Moss-Bachrach] was brilliant in the show, and there were a lot of discussions about it, you know?" he said. "In the end, what I came down to -- and, you know, talking to Jeph [Loeb, Head of Marvel TV] about it and he agreed -- was that we felt we told his story, and I didn't want that character to just become a guy who tapped a computer key and said to Frank, 'Here's an address.' We'd given him a full arc."
David's effect on the main character played a part in how he was considered for the second season. "Also, with Frank, the way you tell a different story for Frank is by putting different people around him. And you know, by not having Micro there, he has to work in a different way," Lightfoot added. "So in the end, it was just about if I can't serve this character with a really interesting story after Season 1, I don't want to relegate him to being a guy who just gives Frank directions."
However, if The Punisher returns for a third season, Micro has a chance of coming back as well. "It doesn't mean that he couldn't pop up in subsequent seasons should we do subsequent seasons," Loeb explained. "We certainly talked about other stories, but this particular story didn't warrant it for the time being."
Moss-Bachrach has previously expressed his interest in reprising the role. For now, though, fans who miss Micro can take consolation in the fact he got his happy ending.
The Punisher Season 2 stars Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Ben Barnes as Billy Russo, Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle, Josh Stewart as John Pilgrim, Floriana Lima as Krista Dumont and Giorgia Whigham as Amy Bendix. Both seasons are now streaming on Netflix.
